{"id":10,"date":"2009-05-10T05:02:02","date_gmt":"2009-05-10T05:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/delectra.com\/toys\/?p=10"},"modified":"2009-05-10T05:04:33","modified_gmt":"2009-05-10T05:04:33","slug":"one-week-busker-organ-is-green-with-wood-grown-in-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/delectra.com\/toys\/?p=10","title":{"rendered":"One week busker organ is green, with wood grown in garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_9\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9\" title=\"dcp_2950\" src=\"https:\/\/delectra.com\/toys\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/dcp_2950.jpg\" alt=\"Green busker\" width=\"448\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/delectra.com\/toys\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/dcp_2950.jpg 640w, https:\/\/delectra.com\/toys\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/dcp_2950-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Green busker<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Having completed my part in wiring a 15 rank Wurlitzer theater organ,\u00c2\u00a0 I wanted to make something small.\u00c2\u00a0 In addition to wiring the Theater organ, I also leathered most of the primary valves and much of the percussion.\u00c2\u00a0 This project has occupied the bulk of my time three days a week for six months.<\/p>\n<p>A new goal is to have a small busker\u00c2\u00a0 organ playing in one week, by May 16 2009.\u00c2\u00a0 This was prompted by a friend making me the tracker bar out of an aluminum block as per the design of John Smith, of England.<\/p>\n<p>Since I had to make some replacement pneumatics for the Wurlizer xylophone, I decided to start the busker with the bellows assembly.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Compared to covering the percussion pnuematics and the swell shade pnuematics and bumpers, the bellows are not much different.\u00c2\u00a0 With only three units to cover, most of the time is spent on the preparation work<\/p>\n<p>When I made the Caliola,\u00c2\u00a0 The pipes were constructed with extra thick walls which were sawed down then planed true.\u00c2\u00a0 This left me with a number of 6.35mm to impossibly thin 2mm sheets of pine.\u00c2\u00a0 The thicker sheets were joined using a router table,\u00c2\u00a0 glued up and planed to 1\/4 inch (6.35mm) these are now the bellows feeders and pressure box.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly some time ago, a small pear tree was cut down.\u00c2\u00a0 This tree was an off shoot sapling from a parent tree, which did not produce tasty fruit.\u00c2\u00a0 It did make pears which were a bit tough.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 This tree was split in half for quarter sawing while still green.\u00c2\u00a0 The wood has been aged some time.\u00c2\u00a0 The tree was somewhere around 20 to 30 years old\u00c2\u00a0 about 2 inches (50mm) across.\u00c2\u00a0 These fruit trees grow slowly and are quite dense, which makes pear a premium wood.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The languids and the caps of the pipes will be made from this wood.<\/p>\n<p>A Monterrey pine tree was also trimmed a few years ago.\u00c2\u00a0 Some of this wood was milled for later use.\u00c2\u00a0 This wood will now be used for the fronts of the smaller pipes visible on the front of the instrument.<\/p>\n<p>I also have a large collection of short\u00c2\u00a0 2 inch thick blocks of cherry wood. This has been re-sawed for gluing up to make the sides of the case and the pressure box.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 By making the bellows, pressure box and case first, The pipes can be set to wind as they are constructed.<\/p>\n<p>There is an estimate online that it should take 52 hours to build one of these organs.\u00c2\u00a0 So far about 16 hours have been spent\u00c2\u00a0 on the setup.<\/p>\n<p>-julie<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The goal is to have the organ playing in one week, by May 16 2009.
